Painting, photography

A combination of surreal and symbolism representing places I have been and thoughts I have had. I like to tell a story with my paintings, and when I do portraits they are of the person, rather than their likeness. I like strong colours and creating a sense of realism, but with it still being clearly a painting. A lot of my work includes ripped canvas and shadows that don't belong. I want to remind the viewer that they are looking at a painting. Reality is much nicer... and I could never capture that.

Each element of the painting has a different meaning, like a puzzle but also they are just nice to look at.

I have a theatre background so a lot of work looks like a stage set (so I've been told).

In essence what I see is what you get. I just hope you like what you see.

Berlin-Guilt, pity and beer
Oil on canvas
On a recent trip to Berlin I was struck by the number of monuments dedicated to the guilt of Berlin and its part jn the second world war and the pity of Berlin prior to the fall of the Berlin Wall. That and the amount of beer on offer - Red star was one of the few things that was exported right through both periods of Berlins chequered 20th Century history.

This is a self portrait. Each image is part of me, the hill, the books, the glass l, the curtain, the sunflowers and the painting blowing across the canvas. These depict paintings I lost in a burglary many years ago. Like the rest of me, they are just a memory
