Lydia Loukeli was born in Athens, Greece in 1986. She is a self taught ceramics artist. She comes from a Civil Engineering background and for years she has been working full time in the corporate world. During pandemic she reflected on herself and what she wanted her life to be which led her to a very intense relationship with art and clay. All her work is very emotive and explorative trying to find a sense of place and purpose.
She mainly focuses on handbuilt ceramics using traditional methods of coiling and slab building. She is using various high firing clay bodies for different purposes. All her work is very organic as she sees perfection in every ‘imperfection’ which she tries to highlight, thus many of her pieces have ripped or rough edges and unglazed areas. She is really drawn to in the material itself and is trying to push the boundaries of its properties and those of unexpected high firing processes so she is making her own textured glazes.
Commercially she has worked with UK and international based clients ranging from high end restaurants, hotels and interior designers. Her latest work for Hertog Jan at the Botanic Sanctuary in Antwerp was featured in the 'Worlds 50 Best Restaurants'.
